Master Tsongkhapa Bronze Statue

Tsongkhapa, born in 1357 in Amdo, Tibet, was a towering figure in Tibetan Buddhism and a pivotal religious reformer. His original name was Losang Drakpa, but he came to be widely known as Tsongkhapa, which refers to the place of his birth.

Tsongkhapa dedicated his life to the study and practice of Buddhism, deeply influenced by the teachings of earlier masters. Concerned about what he perceived as the decline in monastic discipline and the purity of Buddhist teachings at the time, he embarked on a mission of religious reform. He emphasized the importance of strict monastic rules, moral conduct, and a comprehensive understanding of Buddhist philosophy.

In 1409, Tsongkhapa established the Ganden Monastery, which became the first seat of the Gelug school, one of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism that he founded. Under his leadership, the Gelug school grew rapidly, attracting numerous disciples and followers. His teachings combined both sutra and tantra traditions, integrating wisdom and method to guide practitioners on the path to enlightenment.

Tsongkhapa’s most famous works, such as The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, systematically expound the entire Buddhist path, from the basics of ethics to the profoundest levels of meditation and wisdom. These texts continue to be central to Tibetan Buddhist study and practice today. Tsongkhapa passed away in 1419, but his legacy endures through the Gelug school, which has had a far – reaching impact on Tibetan Buddhist culture, philosophy, and religious practice both within Tibet and across the world.
